We asked Debbie Ross the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
I have been teaching fiddle in Tain Royal Academy and surrounding primary schools for the past 21 years, and am part of a team of people who run the 50 strong school traditional music group there – Gizzen Briggs. I am also involved with the Highland Regional Schools Ceilidh Group, “‘Snas”, and regularly play with the Easter Ross based band, Rhythmnreel.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
Growing up, playing the fiddle was something very important to me both musically and socially. We have a great tradition in Scotland and its very important for it to be passed onto the next generation.
Any particular career highlights?
A major highlight was when our school traditional music group, Gizzen Briggs, won the Community Project of the Year award at the 2013 Scots Trad Music Awards.
Another couple of highlights were Gizzen Briggs doing the opening support for RunRig at their 40th anniversary concert in the Black Isle last year, and also playing at the Presiding Officers official reception at the opening of the Scottish Parliament building.
What are your plans for the future?
Gizzen Briggs recently recorded their 6th CD and we are hoping to take the group on a mini-Scottish Tour in June to promote it. At the moment, we are busy rehearsing for our 21st Fiddlers’ Rally in March.
