MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2016: Top Floor Taivers

November 1, 2016 By simon

Top-Floor-TaiversCongratulations to Top Floor Taivers who have been nominated in Up and Coming Artist of the Year sponsored by Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2016. Vote now!

We asked Tina Rees of Top Floor Taivers the following questions.

Tell us about yourself
Top Floor Taivers are a young and fresh Glasgow based band performing traditional and contemporary Scottish songs and tunes. Coming from Scotland, England and Ireland , Top Floor Taivers combine stunning vocals with piano, fiddle and clarsach to create unique arrangements of traditional folk songs and tunes as well as their own compositions.

One question we get asked the most is where our name comes from. We used to rehearse in Tina's flat which was on the top floor (she's moved now but Second Floor Taivers doesn't have quite the same ring), and taiver is a Scots word which means blethering or talking nonsense, which we do a lot of!

Why are you involved in Scottish music?
Scottish music is such a fantastic genre of music to be involved in. We love a variety of styles from very traditional to more contemporary, which is reflected in the music we create as a band. It's amazing to be living in Scotland and playing Scottish music, keeping the tradition alive, as well as moving forward by taking influences from new places.

Any particular career highlights?
An upcoming career highlight for us will be when we perform at Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party this year. We are performing on the ceilidh stage and we are very excited!

What are your plans for the future?
We want to continue to grow and develop as a band, and mostly importantly keep enjoying ourselves whilst making our music.
This year we have been busy recording our debut album 'A Delicate Game'. We are planning to release it in 2017. We can't wait to be able to share it with everyone and to perform it at gigs.
