MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2016: 60’s Bairns

November 1, 2016 By simon

Congratulations to 60’s Bairns who have been nominated in Dance band of the Year sponsored by National Association of Accordion and Fiddle Clubs in the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2016. Vote now!

We asked Marie Fielding of 60’s Bairns the following questions.

Tell us about yourself
We are a brand new band, mainly representing the old style Dance Bands from the past, (1960,s) showcasing classic recordings that are no longer played live. Band members – Duncan Black, Ian Muir, Marie Fielding, Dennis Morrison, Brian Cruickshank, Gordin Smith. BBC Take The Floor is responsible for broadcasting our music, with interviews by Robbie Shepherd. All members were born in the 60s and have similar interests in music. We try to follow the exact arrangements of the bands but the sound we create is unique to us and fresh on the scene. We also have new material in place that is original to us and showcases each band member. As we are new, there are no CDs, press releases, web sites etc. We do it for the love of the music and organise our own events, so that the old and new generations can continue to hear and dance to live music.

Why are you involved in Scottish music?
Two members of the band teach fiddle/accordion at the RCS. We are all heavily involved in promoting and keeping our dance band tradition alive, attending festivals, Acc and Fid clubs, composing and recording as individuals. We have all grown up in the Dance Band tradition and work hard to keep the standard high, as well as encouraging the younge generation.

Any particular career highlights?
Again, we are new on the scene as a band but we have a Scottish Accordion Champion in the band, Duncan Black and Marie Fielding has been a nominee twice for Album and composer of the year. Ian Muir is one of the leading bands for Scottsh Country Dancing. The Rhythm section is of the highest standard.

What are your plans for the future?
We put on a show this year in Perth and plan to take the band further afield to places like Shetland, Mull etc. We may record a cd in the future. There are many old recordings waiting to be explored so we want to continue to develop our repertoire.
