PRS for Music are sponsors of the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2024 and are sponsoring Composer of the Year. We asked them some questions about their experience of sponsoring the Trad Awards. If you would like to come to the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards you can buy tickets here or watch on BBC ALBA from 9pm on Saturday 30th November.
Thanks to Stuart Fleming from PRS for Music for answering these questions.
Why have you chosen to sponsor Na Trads, and what importance does the event hold for your sector?
Scotland’s traditional music carries way beyond these shores. Indeed, many of our songwriters and composers are celebrated in dozens of countries across the world. It’s a privilege for us to be able to recognise some of the outstanding talent in the Traditional Scottish Music scene each year.
What makes your organisation tick?
Songwriters and composers are the epicentre of the music industry: music simply wouldn’t exist without them. Fresh lyrics, smart songwriting and meticulously crafted compositions and arrangements fuse to form songs that hold the power to shape cultures.
PRS for Music represents the rights of more than 175,000 talented songwriters, composers and music publishers. For 110 years we have grown and protected the rights of the music creator community, paying out royalties with more accuracy, transparency and speed.
Our focus also extends to supporting, nurturing and investing in the future music creators. We are proud to be a part of educational workshops and masterclasses, development sessions, and award ceremonies like MG ALBA Scots Trad Awards, which help songwriters and composers fulfil their potential, showcase their talent, and grow our industry internationally.
What are you most looking forward to about the Trad Awards or do you have a favourite moment from over the years?
The MG ALBA Scots Trad Awards is always such a wonderful evening. We are most looking forward to catching up with so many of our amazing members and seeing the wide range of performances that Hands Up For Trad arrange to perform on the night each year.
What would you say to anyone who is considering entering, voting in, watching or attending the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards?
The MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards is an annual celebration of the very best Traditional Music emanating from Scotland. Being part of such a supportive community and showcasing the talent we have on our shores to the rest of the UK and the world is too good an opportunity to miss!
