We asked Madeleine of The Madeleine Stewart Trio the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
The Madeleine Stewart Trio play traditional music from both sides of the Atlantic, with an energy and enthusiasm for music that brings life to old & new tunes. The trio are Madeleine Stewart (fiddle), Rory Matheson (piano) and Craig Baxter (bodhran).
Originally from New Hampshire, Madeleine grew up immersed in the contra dance tradition of New England, and developed her uniquely expressive and lively style of fiddle playing through years of collaborations & projects in Glasgow.
With Rory and Craig, the trio create a richly varied sound, bringing their musicality to everything from rowdy reels to sensitive slow airs – and have recently released their self-titled debut album.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
Madeleine, Rory and Craig met while studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. All three are from places with rich musical traditions; Madeleine is from New England, Rory is from the Highlands, and Craig is from Stirling. Currently they’re all based in Glasgow and share a love for good tunes!
Any particular career highlights?
The trio launched their debut album just this year at Celtic Connections. They have also played in venues across New England and Scotland, as well as festivals including the Scots Fiddle Festival and Edinburgh TradFest.
What are your plans for the future?
We plan to continue touring and playing festivals in the UK, New England and beyond! Having just released our album, we're looking forward to writing more music and playing more tunes.
