We askit Meg Stanger o Aberdeen Student Show thae speirins.
Tell us aboot yersel or yer ootfit.
Weel, here at Aberdeen Student Show we’ve been pittin on shows fer an affa lang time noo, ower a hunner years! Oor shows are doric parodies of weel-kint films, stories, or musicals, and aa’ the money we raise gets split atween heaps o charities fa aa aroon the North East.
Whit wis it got ye involvit wi the Scots leid?
See fir us at Student show it comes natrally. We get an affa lot o folk fae Fraserburgh and Peterheid far its jist the common tongue. Even in Aiberdeen its affa common, yi hear jist aboot abidy spikin awa in their native tongue so since ih majority o us are fae here, we’re aridy spikin scots onywye! And we aa try oor best tae teach abidy fa isnae aridy spikin scots. Since 1921 Student Show has bin a haven for Doric performance on Aiberdeen’s stages.
Why dae ye feel it is important tae use Scots in everyday life?
We believe it’s important tae keep spikkin Scots to keep oor heritage alive. Muckle folkies hiv bin telt tae spik “proper” and ti nae use the Doric, and we think at’s nae richt! We try tae bring Scots tae the young folks and the students fa maybe hivnae encountered it afore. Doric connects the folkies o Aiberdeen like nithin else, it maks us richt proud o oor wee Granite City.
Dae ye hae a favourite Scots phrase or saying?
Is it nae jist impossible tae choose jist een? Ah us at ih Student Show pride wersels on jist ‘gieing it laldy’, so much so that we aften end up ‘fair puggelt’ so those wid definitely be up there with oor favourites. Although, for many o wer cast fa hiv niver spoken Doric afor ‘foggie bummer’ is always a gweed een.
Is there a Scots speaker who inspires you?
There hiv been so mony Scots spikkers fa hiv been involved in Student Show and inspired us ower the years, probably the most weel-kint wid be the mannies fae Scotland The What? Buff Hardie, Stephen Robertson, and George Donald hiv left such a great legacy of Scots comedy, so much so that we give oot a special ‘Scotland The What? Award’ tae een o the new the cast members fa’ve given aathin they’ve got to the Show. We’re affa prood tae hiv this association wi such fine folks.
Do you hear Scots spoken regularly in your local area? Have you noticed any changes over time?
Een o the maist special hings aboot jynin the Student Show is getting tae hear aa the different versions o’ the Doric fae aa’ ower the north east. Hearin the differences atween fit the toonsers say and fit folks fae the Broch say, or those fae Peterheid, or getting to listen to teuchters fae Deeside, is pure magic. It's ace tae learn new words.
Ony particlar career heighlichts
Spikkin on behalf o’ abidy involved, ave got ti say iss past year fan we broke oor record for money raised wis affa special. Ower £125,000 fir local charity is summin we niver thoucht us lot would be dein fan we joined so gettin i chance ti help sae much folk we such a muckle amount o’ money really is amazin. Ih legacy of oor Doric production on the folkies of Aiberdeen gives us shivers of pride.
Wha’s yer plans fir the days aheid?
Its nae quite been announced yet, but we’ve got oor next show lined up fir next year aridy! Hopefully we can smash ‘is years total and raise even mare money for loads o local charities.
Besides at we’ve got heaps o fundraisers and the kind sorted oot aa oer Aberdeen for the hael year to help us smash last years total!
We cannae wait to keep building oor special connection we the fine folk o Aiberdeen using the mither tongue.
