Perth High school is a muckle secondary in bonnie Perth. We hae almost 1500 bairns at oor school fa spik a gye mony leids as weel as Scots. Fae oor school we can see the hills o the highlands on one side, and Kinoull Hill ben the ither.
Whit wis it got ye involvit wi the Scots leid?
Oor English team hiv bin championing Scots fir a nummer o years and wis nominated fir this same award in 2020. This gied us the momentum to create a hale new Scots Language course for oor bairns, fae S1-S3, and wirk towards gaining the SQA Scots Language Award.
We are also gye lucky to hae author Matthew Mackie (The Tale o the wee mowdie) as oor Principal teacher o Computing Studies at oor school.
Ony particlar career heighlichts
Oor very ain Mrs Kerry Fraser won the Scots teacher o the year award in 2021 fir her efforts in creating oor coursework and aywis finding weys to get Scots intae oor school and classrooms.
Oor S1 bairns wirked wi Historic Environmental Scotland to create a glossary for their year o the stories magazine that hid a Scots poyum aboot 'The Maiden's Leap'. They also scrieved their ain poyums inspired by 'The Maiden's Leap' at Huntingtower castle that were published n ah. Oor published poets were fair tricket to see their wirk in print.
Some o oor S3 helped Laura Green and the Scots Language Centre as testers fir their website, and fit they liked/dinna like.
We hae shared oor expertise o using Scots in the classroom wi ither teachers ,and Mrs Fraser has spoken tae aspiring English teachers at Dundee Uni.
Wha’s yer plans fir the days aheid?
Scots is in embedded in oor English classrooms, and next we'll be makin sure as mony bairns gain their SQA Scots Language Award.
We also hae a project in the pipeline atween English and Computing to design an app the bairns can use tae help with their Scots.
