Tell us aboot yersel or yer ootfit.
Mearns Academy is a secondary school in Laurencekirk, on the North East Coast of Scotland. We are a small school who are proud of our strong connection to the local area
Whit wis it got ye involvit wi the Scots leid?
The Mearns is the backdrop to Lewis Grassic Gibbon's fantastic Scots novel Sunset Song, so we make sure to study it with our senior classes. To look out the window and see the heather-clad hills of Chris Guthrie's home is pretty special.
We put a focus on the speaking, reading and writing of Doric at Mearns too. The majority of our pupils only speak a handful of words, so we have been working hard to keep Doric, and Scots, alive.
Ony particlar career heighlichts
We just won the schools category at the Doric Film Festival! Our s2s made a short film about how important Sunset Song and the Scots language is to us here at Mearns
Wha’s yer plans fir the days aheid?
More entries into the Doric Film Festival, perhaps, and much more reading, writing and speaking in Scots for pupils of all ages!
