Scots Language Awards 2022: Andrew McCrae

Tell us aboot yersel or yer ootfit.
Ah’m a teacher o English and Scots at Perth High School. Ah stertit teachin Scots tae S2 a few years back and since then the department has made Scots a crucial part of the curriculum. Ah’ve worked closely wi last year’s Scots Teacher o the Year – Mrs Fraser – to encourage the use of Scots in our school and over the years we hiv haud visits fae Matthew Fitt and pupils’ Scots poems published in magazines.

Whit wis it got ye involvit wi the Scots leid?
Ah noticed that a wis speckin and learnin lots o Scots words over the years and a found somethin eminently enjoyable about the sound of the language, how can you no love a language that has wirds lik bahookie and fernitickles! Ma neebor Mrs Fraser has always helped me wi Scots and over time Ah made some wee activities fir the weans. This grew and now we are developing resources fir the Scots Language Award for the entire S3 year group, aboot three hunner pupils.

Hearin the weans start tae enjoy speckin Scots.

Wha’s yer plans fir the days aheid?
Tae keep promotin Scots in ma school!
