Tell us aboot yersel or yer ootfit.
At Rubric, we work with global companies to grow them internationally by localizing their content and streamlining their translation processes. We started Rubric in 1994 because we saw a gap in the market for turning the cottage industry of translation into something more industrial. We are based in Edinburgh, which is a great place for doing business with our predominately American customers and European/Asian suppliers.
Whit wis it got ye involvit wi the Scots leid?
As a translation provider, we are fanatical about language and we are great lovers of Scotland and the Scots language. I grew up as Scoto-Danish, living in Denmark and speaking Danish. When I came to St Andrew’s as a student, I experienced quite a language shock as the support staff spoke broad Scots! I quickly realised that Scots was a very different language from English. As new Scots ourselves, it goes without saying we should support our own language and help it to flourish.
Ony particlar career heighlichts
An ongoing joy of our work is making content available to people in their own languages. This is what drove us to lead the project to translate Mozilla Firefox into Scots. We had previously worked with Mozilla on other minority languages, including South African Xhosa. A famous Xhosa speaker, Nelson Mandela once said: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
Wha’s yer plans fir the days aheid?
We hope that the Scots speaking community will take over the Scots version of Firefox now that we have kick-started it. It’s unusual for a commercial company like us to translate a Mozilla product in this way. Usually, the community translates handles all translations. For us, it’s very much a seeding exercise, it’s not a commercial exercise. The language has to live and the community has to take over now.
