MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards: Tin Hut Sessions

November 9, 2014 By simon

Tin-Hut-SignCongratulations to Tin Hut Sessions who have been nominated in Club of the Year sponsored by Trac Scotland in the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2014. Vote now!

We asked Bob Sharp of Tin Hut Sessions the following questions.

Tell us about yourself
We are a rural folk club based in Gartly Aberdeenshire which promotes monthly music sessions where all genres of music is encouraged and performed. Throughout the year we also host “In Concert” nights with guest artists from both UK based acts to American and Canadian acts.

Why are you involved in Scottish music?
I feel it is very important to keep the tradition alive and encourage up and coming young acts and by offering a concert platform or a session night where they can either perform or listen to others, this will ensure that the music and song will remain alive for many years to come. As a person I have been involved in the folk music scene since the early 1960’s both as a performer and as a organiser of various folk clubs and believe passionately that we must keep as many folk clubs going as possible to promote a vibrant folk music scene within all parts of Scotland

Any particular career highlights?
Our “Tin Hut In Concert” nights continue to go from strength to strength with an audience across a wide and varied age range coming along and from completely different backgrounds. To pick highlights would be difficult but I personally enjoyed the late great Michael Marra sitting with his slippers on, playing a keyboard sat on top of an ironing board singing his wonderful songs in that lovely Dundonian accent. Telling stories which kept the audience spellbound was the mark of a true master, a definite highlight. Of course not forgetting Dick Gaughan also a sell out night.

What are your plans for the future?
To continue to host The Tin Hut In Concert guest nights throughout the year in professional manner, and to keep running our monthly open sessions encouraging the young musicians and singers of today to keep at it. It should also be said that we encourage people to just come along to listen as well for they are also an integral part in the process of keeping our wonderful music tradition alive and it should not be forgotten how important an audience is to a successful night.
