MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards: Swimmings of the Head by Kate in the Kettle

October 1, 2015 By simon 0 Comments

Kate-in-the-Kettle-front1Congratulations to Kate in the Kettle who’s album Swimmings of the Head has been nominated in Album of the Year (sponsored by Birnam CD) in the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2015. Vote now!

We asked Kate in the Kettle about their album Swimmings of the Head.

‘Swimmings of the Head’ is a daring debut album by Kate in the Kettle which seamlessly swoops and glides between Scottish traditional, Scandinavian, Indian and Arabic influences. The trio, lead by composer, singer and fiddler Kate Young, take you on an unexpected path as they challenge and fuse borders between the traditional and the original, with arrangements co-created by Marit Fält (SE/NO) on Låt-Mandola and Victor Solana (ES) on tabla and percussion. While this album is dynamic and varied, there is also a well-mapped out cohesion between each tune as it dances from tracks such as “Salmon” (two fiddle tunes from Scotland and Finland) to “Paper Rose” (a jig coupled with a piece by Eric Satie).

“Its success lies in the musicans’ understanding that there are often more similarities than differences between traditions and it’s this which has enabled Kate and her collaborators to produce one of the most highly listenable and finely-balanced experimental albums of the year.” – Folk Radio UK.

About Kate in the Kettle
Kate in the Kettle is lead by Scottish musician and composer, Kate Young. She is also known for her work in the fiddle-singers quartet “Carthy, Oates, Farrell & Young” (formerly “Carthy, Hardy, Farrell & Young), and also Moulettes. With a firm grounding in folk and traditional music in Scotland and around the UK, Kate is inspired to develop her knowledge this, whilst combining it with songwriting and fiddle-singing techniques.

The band formed in Newcastle whilst Marit Fält, Victor Solana and Kate were studying music at the same time, and pooled together tune repertoires of Scandinavia, and Indian tabla techniques and so on, to form quite a unique sound. Swimmings of the Head was released on the 10th October, 2014, engineered and produced by Andy Bell.

Today Kate can be seen performing live with a varying line-up of musicians, including Francesca Ter-Berg on cello.
