We asked Rachel Newton the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
Singer, Harpist and Fiddler Rachel Newton is one of Scotland’s busiest folk musicians, having performed and toured with many of the best known bands and singers around. A founder member of The Shee, The Furrow Collective and the BBC2 Folk Award winning Emily Portman Trio, Rachel also composes and performs her own solo material and released her debut album ‘The Shadow Side’ in 2012. The album was nominated in the Scots Trad Music Awards 2012 and received much critical acclaim. Her second album, ‘Changeling’ was released in September 2014 and Rachel has since been touring with her new trio featuring Lauren MacColl on fiddle and Mattie Foulds on percussion.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
I became involved in Scottish music from a young age. Attending a Gaelic speaking school in Edinburgh and attending Feis activities both in Edinburgh and in the Highlands sparked my interest in the music.
Any particular career highlights?
A definite highlight this year was performing my New Voices piece at Celtic Connections festival.
What are your plans for the future?
As well as new albums and tours with the various bands I’m involved in, I’d like to focus more on my own material and performing with my trio next year.
