We asked Julie Fowlis the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
Julie is a singer and multi-instrumentalist based in the Highlands of Scotland who sings primarily in Scottish Gaelic and who performs traditional music worldwide. She was sought out by Disney Pixar film makers and invited to be the main singing voice in the box office hit ‘Brave’ in 2012. Recent collaborations include recording and performance projects with virtuoso violinist Nicola Benedetti and renowned Welsh singer Aled Jones.
She released her fourth studio album ‘Gach Sgeul/Every Story’ in 2014 to critical acclaim, earning 5 stars from Songlines magazine who hailed it as one of the best world music albums of the year. Julie has toured this album throughout 2014 with regular comrades Éamon Doorley, Duncan Chisholm, Tony Byrne and Ewen Vernal; first class musicians who are individually and collectively with Julie known for emotional, intuitive and high energy performances.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
‘It’s part of who I am, and it’s a privilege to be involved in a dynamic, inclusive music scene like this on a professional basis.’ Julie
Any particular career highlights?
‘Performing live to a worldwide audience of a billion at the Opening Ceremony of the Glasgow XX Commonwealth Games and not forgetting the words.’ Julie
What are your plans for the future?
Plans for 2015 include more touring and collaborations. More music!
