We asked Findlay Napier the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
Findlay made his name touring and recording with multi- award winning traditional Scottish folk band Back of the Moon. In his more recent projects “Queen Anne’s Revenge” and “The Bar Room Mountaineers” his song- writing took centre stage
and was described by The Sunday Herald as “Genuine songcraft and wit following in the Difford & Tilbrook tradition”. Findlay is also well known for hosting Glasgow’s premier open mic night at Bar Bloc, as the host of Celtic Connections’ Late Night Sessions and for his Hazy Recollections concert series which showcases the very best in new roots music.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
I come from a musical family and I’ve always been surrounded my traditional music. It was through attending Feis Spe as a teenager that I decided that I’d like to make a career of performing music. I moved to Glasgow in the 90s to study Scottish Music at the RCS and I’ve been involved in music ever since.
Any particular career highlights?
Winning the Burnsong Competition in 2013 and attending the UK Songwriting Festival was a surprise and very inspirational. Also in 2013 a professional development grant from Creative Scotland allowed me to write and record with songwriter Boo Hewerdine. More recently supporting Eddi Reader on her autumn UK tour was a huge amount of fun and a great honour.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to release two singles from my new album VIP: Very Interesting Persons and a five track EP which will feature five unreleased tracks from VIP. I also have a solo UK tour planned. I’m continuing to write, record and perform as often as possible.
