Nava and The Secret North, Celtic Connections 2018

January 19, 2018 By simon 1 Comment

Bringing together six leading contemporary folk talents, sharing fruitfully diverse backgrounds, The Secret North began with five days’ intensive workshopping in a remote Highland studio last summer. Scotland’s Ailie Robertson (harp) and Donald Grant (fiddle), together with Jarlath Henderson (uillean pipes/whistles), Karen Tweed (accordion), Norway’s Sondre Meisfjord (bass) and Swedish/Norwegian mandola ace Marit Fält all contributed new original compositions, charting fresh common ground between Celtic and Scandinavian tradition, jazz and classical music.

Chan eil sian nas fhèarr ann na bhith a’ tighinn gu cuiream aig Celtic Connections le dà chòmhlan air nach eil thu eòlach agus tilleadh dhachaigh leotha glaiste nad cheann. ’S e seo dìreach mar a thachair dhòmhsa an dèidh a bhith air Navá & an Secret North.

’S e oidhche sònraichte de cheòl ùr a fhuair sinn, air a thoirt ri chèile le luchd-ciùil à diofar dhùthchannan anns gach còmhlan. A tòiseachadh le Navá, ’s ann an Èirinn a tha an ceathrar a tha seo stèidhte le Paddy Kiernan agus Niall Hughes, air guitar is banjo agus dithis bhrathair a rugadh an Ioràin, Shahab agus Shayan Coohe le Santoor, Tombak is Tar. Bheireadh an ceòl aig Navá ort smaointinn gu bheil ceangal dlùth aig Ceòl na h-Eirinn agus ceòl Pearsach. Tha iad a’ fighe còmhladh beachdan bhon ear agus an iar airson fuam ùr is beò a chruthachadh eadar purit-cruinn, ruidhleachan agus ceòl Pearsach. Tha iad seo air rudeigin breagha a chruthachadh agus channainn ribh gun an ath chuirm aca a chall airson cheòlmhor gu taobh eile an t-saoghal.

Chum an oidhche a dol leis an Secret North. Chan e còmnlan a th’annta ach pròiseact. Pròiseact far an tàinig sianar, nach robh eòlach air a chèile, a fhuirich seachdain ann an taigh comhladh airson ceòl ùr a sgrìobhadh. Sin e, agus ’s iad a rinn an obair anns an t-seachdain a bha sin! ’S iad Ailie Robertson, Donald Grant, Karen Tweed, Jarlath Henderson, Marit Falt agus Sondre Meisfjord. Bha teansa aig gach duine anns a ‘phròiseact’ am pìos a sgrìobh iadsan a chluich dhuinn. Bha pearsa gach ceòladair a’ tighinn troimhe anns gach pìos a chuala sinn aca. Thàinig aca air fad air seasamh an àirde fhad ’s a bha iad aig an aon àm a suidhe air ais còmhladh mar shianar.

Oidhche air leth le còmhlan is pròiseact a thàinig ri chèile airson ceòl ùr tlachdmhor a chruthachadh a bha air fad ealanta, soirbheachail agus breagha. Gabh an teansa a dhol gam faicinn mu thilleas iad.
