Buttergask was a hamlet in Perthshire which existed for several hundred years, located near the modern village of Blackford. The local industry was handloom weaving, and when the Industrial Revolution came along Buttergask went into a gradual decline with people moving away to find work. It ceased to exist by the mid 20th century, and now nothing remains to tell of its existence and the lives that were spent here.
My guitarist bandmate, Neill Simpson, wrote the evocative Scots lyrics for the tune which are shown in the music. Can be played as a slow air or sung as a song.
