YOUR LGBT+ CHOIR NEEDS YOU! Come and lead Loud and Proud!

Scotland’s a cappella LGBT+ choir (Edinburgh based) is looking for a new Musical Director.

Loud and Proud Choir, Edinburgh (SC038303) is seeking a new enthusiastic and dedicated Musical Director (MD) from September 2018. Loud and Proud was established over a decade ago as an LGBT+ community, a cappella, non-auditioning choir with 50+ members. The choir welcomes everyone irrespective of their musical ability. We have a wide musical repertoire, incorporating traditional Scottish, folk, world, musicals and pop, and mostly sing in four-part SATB harmonies. Start: September 2018 (3-month mutual trial period)

Terms: Freelance position / Self-employed, hourly fee to be negotiated

Current Rehearsals: Mondays 7:00pm – 9:30pm, Edinburgh

Key Duties:

● To be in charge of conducting and directing weekly rehearsals, including appropriate warm-up exercises

● Be able and willing to create appropriate Learning Tracks for members to study in their own time

● Conduct the choir at our current three main performances (Spring/Festival/Festive) and if possible at other smaller gigs as agreed during the course of the year (e.g. World AIDS Day, Pride, Various Voices)

● Select appropriate and balanced repertoire for concerts in liaison with nominated representatives from the choir (the Music Team), choosing a wide and varied selection of music in order to challenge more able members without disadvantaging others (members can suggest songs, with the music team and MD deciding on suitability)

● Extend the choir’s repertoire, challenge and nurture each member’s skillset

● Attend committee meetings when invited to do so and support the aims of the Choir

● Other duties in line with the role agreed between the post holder and the committee

● Be prepared to make a firm commitment to the choir

Essential Skills / Experience

● Experience of conducting a large community choir

● Demonstrable teaching ability, encompassing a wide variety of learning styles

● Demonstrate good time management and organisational skills

● Work in tandem with the choir committee and attend meetings when required

● A ‘People Person’: A good communicator, capable of connecting well with others and setting a friendly, enjoyable and dynamic choir environment

● Understanding / experience of LGBT+ issues

Desirable Skills / Experience

● Have the ability to arrange/compose music

● Competent and experienced in teaching by ear would be a distinct advantage

● Extensive knowledge of choral music from a variety of genres.
