Upmak Records is the first dedicated outlet for experimental folk music recordings in Scotland. We aim to bring experimental folk music into the public domain, to draw attention to and support this work, and to inspire new folk music experiments.
Upmak Records operates as a cooperative for the benefit of the artists. A steering group discuss and/or vote on all major decisions. The current steering group includes Inge Thomson, Simon Thoumire, Lori Watson, Martin Green and Alasdair Campbell.
By experimental folk music, we mean music that explores new creative directions for folk and traditional music and musicians* based in Scotland. We include both quiet and bold/exciting work, work that reveals process, that crosses genres, that uses technology or improvisation. Beyond this, the breadth and scope will be shaped by artist submissions and the decisions of the steering group.
*Musicians who have demonstrable fluency in traditional and/or folk music and self-identify as a traditional and/or folk musician (including as part of a broader portfolio of musical activity).
We propose to launch the label digitally in October 2024 and will have a public call in October for recordings.
