Stewart Cruickshank was a huge force for good in Scottish music. Producing radio programmes for the BBC, he nurtured an enormous amount of talent, impacting the lives of countless musicians and listeners.
His unsparing encouragement was legendary. He built connections, gave people the impetus to create, selflessly shared and promoted artists’ work, and in so doing helped create Scottish music as we know it.
To honour his legacy there is to be a new award made to an emerging songwriter.
The Stewart Cruickshank Bursary will be open to applications from songwriters resident in Scotland, of any age, working in any genre.
They must be as yet unestablished, with no professional management, and no more than one experience of professional recording. The entry requirement will be one example of their work and an artist statement.
A panel drawn from the Scottish music world (musicians, management, radio and education) will select one winner, who will be awarded the inaugural Stewart Cruickshank Bursary.
The judges will work with the winning entrant to put together a package that will (1) help develop their songwriting and (2) give them studio experience.
Potential partners in delivering these elements include Moniack Mhor Creative Writing Centre, Glasgow Songwriting Festival, University of The West of Scotland and Chem 19 Recording Studio.
The award has been made possible by the legacy of Burnsong.
