One of the questions I get asked alot is “How do I find a good publisher?” I never really have a good answer so I asked publishing guru Duncan McCrone of MCPS. Here is the conversation.
Me: Many folks ask me how to find a publisher that will push their music to the right agencies. Do you have any sage advice on this?
Duncan: Big question!
There’s hundreds of publishers out there – some are related to record companies, some specialise in particular types of music.
I would recommend that writers do a bit of research. Obviously, target a publisher that specialises in the type of music they compose – maybe look at who publishes their peers or heroes. Be sure what they want from the publisher – is it syncs? Getting covers? Help with sourcing a record deal? Etc.
They come in all shapes and sizes – from hobbyists working from home to major multinationals, but I’d be very wary of anyone who asks for money upfront to publish material.
Not much help beyond stating the bleeding obvious, sorry, but it’s worth pointing out that publishing usually involves transfer of the rights to the publisher, so it’s essential to get legal advice before signing any contracts…
Cheers, Duncan
