I was chatting to a friend of mine after last weeks ‘Opportunities’ newsletter and their opening line was that this newsletter was not so much Opportunities for Musicians but Opportunities for Administrators. It is an interesting point well made and made me think. What are opportunities for musicians? Funding, commissions, retreats, office space, auditions etc. As you all very well know there aren’t too many funding opportunities out there outside Creative Scotland, PRS Foundation and Help Musicians. There are a few trusts and foundations but they’re not so easy to get at.
Musicians have to think on their feet. Financially it is not the easiest lifestyle and we have to do many things to bring in an income. Of course we choose to live a creative life and it is fantastic – we don’t do this to become millionaires. This is my thoughts on this opportunities newsletter. How can we provide information on extra opportunities that can add to our incomes when we are not touring. Also I am very interested on how musicians continue to earn when they reach the end of their 20s – have different responsibilities like families, mortgages etc and more young musicians are coming on the scene who don’t have these same responsilities, don’t need as high gig fees etc. All too much to discuss in one blog sitting in a cafe…
Any thoughts ping them on!
By the way I love discussion on things like this. There is definitely not enough discussion nowadays about anything. Nobody should feel bad about speaking up. I’m always up for listening.
