In the First World War 6,712 men from the Isle of Lewis served in the armed forces and 1,151 died; the highest per capita for any community in Britain. And yet it is the tragedy which occurred after the Armistice which defines that bitter experience. In the early hours of New Years Day 1919, HMY Iolaire sank at the entrance to Stornoway Harbour with the loss of 205 returning servicemen. There were but 79 survivors. Although it is the worst peacetime shipping disaster in British Coastal Waters of the 20th Century, outside the Islands even now, it remains relatively unknown.
The 100th anniversary of the Iolaire disaster will be the final event in the national 4 year programme commemorating Centenary of The Great War.
