The Assistant Musical Director will work under the guidance of Mary Ann Kennedy, lead c. 20 regular evening rehearsals per year, occasional weekend workshops, some performances and potentially conduct the ladies’ choir in competition. The role would be particularly suited to someone wishing to develop their conducting skills. CGI is one of the most dynamic choirs in Scotland, in the vanguard of contemporary Gaelic choral music. With around 35-40 dedicated singers, a well-organised committee and creative leadership, the choir follows a regular schedule of competition, culminating in the annual National Mòd in October. This is just part of CGI’s life – it’s proud of its reputation as boundary-breaker, from studio recording, TV and radio, to live performance and collaboration on the Celtic Connections festival mainstage and PRS Foundation’s New Music Biennial. CGI has a core repertoire of traditional Gaelic choral music, while expanding the genre through work with the likes of composers Stuart MacRae, Scott Macmillan, singer song-writer Adam Holmes and the choir’s own Musical Director, Mary Ann Kennedy.
Membership is open, inclusive, with Gaelic and non-Gaelic speakers, music readers ear-learners. Learning is supported by an online library of scores, audio music and language files and rehearsal mixes. The core output of the choir is SATB, with a women’s chorus for competition, and two affiliated male and female vocal ensembles, Trosg and Siaban.
Còisir Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis is – as many choirs are – a family: we are looking for someone special who will contribute to this unique community, both in achieving our aspirations for making beautiful music, and in contributing to the social life of the choir. Potential candidates would be required to meet with the Musical Director, Gaelic Reader and CGI committee representative for interview prior to appointment.
