Dave Francis sent me this blog called “The reward from art is experiencing yourself opening up” (Joe Morris interviewed by Doug Fischer)”
For one reason or another, this blog turns its attention to free jazz infrequently. That’s too bad. In a nutshell, I think it’s a lot harder to write smartly — especially with the constraints on my time — about free jazz than it is to discuss music that’s more connected to the tradition that reveres and works with swinging time and canonical repertoire.
But I like it when the blog rolls up its sleeves and gets into the discussions of the mechanics and esthetics of free playing, and I’m indebted to my colleague Doug Fischer for contributing a transcription of his interview with guitarist Joe Morris, who plays Monday night in the NAC Fourth Stage at 8 p.m. with bassist William Parker and drummer Charles Downs.
