The BIG Project is currently seeking applications from an enthusiastic, dynamic Deputy Music Director to work alongside the Music Director and a team of youth work staff and volunteers for up to 7 hours per week on Monday afternoons and evenings to deliver a YMI funded singing and songwriting project running from September 2018 – August 2019. Activities will include:
Wee Sing (2 – 4 pm): 22 x 1 hour singing sessions to develop musical skills, confidence and positive behaviours for 30 children aged 5 – 7, taking place at The BIG Project.
Love Music Junior Choir (4 – 6.30 pm) : 24 x 1 hour singing sessions where 30 children and young people aged 8 – 12 from The BIG Project will be accompanied by the staff team to travel to the Usher Hall, where they will form part of the 200 strong Love Music Junior Choir, led by Stephen Deazley. The BIG Project staff team will observe these sessions as part of our continuing professional development.
Make Music Club / BIG Sing: (6.30 – 9 pm) 32 x 1.75 hour sessions where 15 young people aged 13 – 18 will form bands, write their own songs, develop instrumental skills and work towards three local live performances of their new original work, with support from the staff team and two additional tutors who are professional songwriters/musicians. This includes 8 weeks where the Love Music Junior Choir members and Make Music Club members work together as “BIG Sing” to share songs, skills and learning, and to sing together, including local performances.
The Deputy Music Director should be able to commit to the majority of Mondays during the school term, in addition to a few further Mondays. There will be performances taking place on other days and dates tbc including holiday periods; attendance at these will be subject to the Deputy Music Director’s availability.
Initially, the Deputy Music Director will join the team in a supporting role; after a three week induction there will be regular dates when the Deputy Music Director leads the team musically in the absence of the Music Director. Rate of pay will be £20 per hour on a freelance basis.
Essential skills for the Deputy Music Director:
– enthusiasm

– teaching singing parts by call and response
– conducting
– planning and organisation
– good communication by email, phone, and in person
Desirable, but not essential, skills for the Deputy Music Director:
– reading music notation
– understanding of good vocal technique
– arranging songs
– knowledge of child protection procedures
– youth work experience
