The Scottish Music Centre is pleased to launch the 2012/13 Composition Marathon through the opening Call for Applications.
Inspired by New York-based collective, Bang On A Can’s iconic Performance Marathons and established in November 2011, this unique project challenges ten composers, selected through application, to write a new work for professional première in less than 24 hours.
Aside from providing artists with a new and exciting platform in which to present their work, the Composition Marathon is centered on long-term engagement, generating future commissioning and performance opportunities for all involved.
Applications are invited from composers of varying musical backgrounds and levels of experience and should be submitted in the form of a CV and covering letter detailing proposed creative ideas which demonstrate ambition, passion and drive for the development of contemporary classical music in Scotland. Additionally, a variety of score and audio examples are encouraged in support of your submission.
Following the selection process, the marathon commences at 9am at the Scottish Music Centre on Saturday 23rd March 2013. Successful candidates will be paired with five of Scotland’s finest chamber ensembles and set to work on creating their latest masterpiece with on-hand support offered from staff and numerous other industry professionals.
On Sunday 24th March, musicians will rehearse the completed scores, culminating in a final performance at The Arches, Glasgow.
The Scottish Music Centre maximizes its resources for all involved in this project through extensive publicity, support and subsequent development opportunities. Essential supplies including manuscript, stationery, computers, notation software, printing, binding, travel and catering are also provided during the marathon weekend.
