Community Instrumental Music Service for Rural Scotland (CIMSRS) Symposium 2025, on Monday, 26 May 2025 at Edinburgh Napier University Craiglockhart Campus.

This innovative symposium highlights the research, impact, and goals of the CIMSRS project in community and learning development, with a focus on creating sustainable rural community music education to make music learning more accessible for adults in rural Scotland, who are often excluded from engagement based on age and geographic barriers.

The event will run from 9am-4:30pm, with a morning and afternoon session. We also invite you to join us for lunch and refreshments throughout the day. This symposium is led by CIMSRS Primary Researcher Arianna Ranieri, and the CIMSRS project supervisory team, Prof. Zack Moir and Bryden Stillie (Edinburgh Napier University).

We would be very excited to have you representing Edinburgh Napier University’s Public Engagement team, to join discussions and collaborate with fellow initiative leaders, policymakers, Instrumental Music Service leaders, music librarians, music educators, participants of CIMSRS and musicians across Scotland, who are dedicated to rural, adult music education.

Event Mission:

  • learn more about CIMSRS as a framework for adult music learning and community cohesion in rural Scotland, and further develop sustainable music scenes for adults in rural areas of the country
  • identify existing barriers in providing opportunities for rural music education for adults and discuss solutions
  • connect and collaborate to investigate paths of support for ongoing outreach and facilitate public music engagement activities for adults in rural Scotland
