Do you pay money into a pension fund?
Q. What do musicians tend not to have? A. A pension fund!
I asked Sheena MacDonald at the Musicians’ Union what their advice would be and she sent this.
Musicians Union Pension Scheme
Hencilla Canworth were asked in 1999 by the Union to develop a new Scheme for Members.
Hencilla Canworth were chosen because we have many years experience in running this type of Scheme, including the the Equity Pension Scheme which has been running since 1997.
In December 2012 the Scheme achieved the status of a Qualifying Workplace Pension Scheme.
The Scheme is held with Aviva, the UK’s largest Insurer, who have over £330 billion under management.
Call us on 020 8686 5050 for a membership pack or to discuss further.

Sample CD budget
Below is a link to a sample CD budget. I’ve populated it with figures. They are all realistic but you will notice at the bottom of the spreadsheet that there is still a deficit (ie you still don’t have enough money). Practise playing around with the figures – taking things out / finding cheaper options etc until you get a zero deficit.
What you have to do now is to put in your own financial figures (including income). When they are in play around with the figures until you have a budget that works for you. Any questions please get in touch.

Young Trad Accompanists
At the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Award Finals last week I was so impressed with our house band. They had to perform with 5 out of the 6 finalists (Jack Badcock performed solo) and remember often complicated arrangements. Needless to say they pulled them off with aplomb. It is never straightforward for these guys and they have remember pushes and pulls and stops and longs (new terms!). It’s just amazing.
So thank you to Mhairi Hall, Mike Bryan and Martin O’Neill – you are magic!!
Watch them play live with the finalists here http://www.bbc.co.uk/events/ebn8q9
Congratulations to Robyn Stapleton – BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2014

New album from Emily Smith
It’s great to see past Young Trad winners doing well. Emily Smith (2002 winner) has worked very hard with lots of touring and album releases since 2002. She is a fab interpreter of Scots song and also an accomplished song writer. Emily is about to release her latest album Echoes (release date Feb 24th) and the snippets I’ve heard sound fantastic. Check out the official video below.
If you would like hear the next winner of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Award why not come along to the City Halls, Glasgow at 5pm on 2nd February. Failing that you will hear the whole final live on BBC Radio Scotland from 5pm to 8pm.
