Tom Oakes (Ross Couper + Tom Oakes), Jon Bews (Shooglenifty, James Yorkston, Cantrip) and Daniel Thorpe (Young Trad Musician 2010, Tyde) came together in early 2016 to explore Scottish, Irish and English traditional music alongside the contemporary arrangement ideas resonating in the sphere of world music. Lush strings, driving rhythm and intricate melody playing on fiddle, 5-string fiddle, Nylon String ‘Alto’ guitar and Wooden Flute. OBT bring with them a huge range of experience. Dan and Jon both experts in Scottish traditional dance music both also have an impressive classical pedigree and Jon is also frequently in demand in the contemporary music scene playing with James Yorkston and the Last Battle. Tom (a virtuoso flautist as well as guitarist) comes from the Irish music world but also composes everything from electronic soundscapes to string quintets and theatre scores. Daniel won the coveted ‘Scottish Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2010 and was a nominee for ‘Tutor of the Year’ in the 2016 Scots trad awards.
The band was launched at the Scots Fiddle festival last year along with our debut EP and our European debut followed shortly after at Osafestivalen in Norway.
Debut EP out now and full album next year. Touring in the Autumn includes The Scots Fiddle Festival and Feis na Mara
