Photo: Paul Campbell.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Aberdeen has been unveiled as this year\u2019s host location for the 2025 <strong>MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards <\/strong>\u2013 the biggest award ceremony celebrating Scotland\u2019s traditional music scene \u2013 as nominations open today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking place on <strong>Saturday 6th December<\/strong>, the \u2018folk Oscars\u2019 as they are fondly known, will showcase and applaud those at the heart of Scotland\u2019s homegrown music community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nominations open today, until <strong>Sunday 19th October<\/strong>, and the public are being called on to put their favourite musicians, venues, events and organisations forward for recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/scotstradmusicawards\/voting\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/scotstradmusicawards\/voting\/\">NOMINATE NOW<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the 22 categories, awards that are up for grabs include Album of the Year, Musician of the Year, Venue of the Year, Festival of the Year, Music Tutor of the Year, and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previous winners include some of Scottish music\u2019s biggest names including Julie Fowlis, Skerryvore and the late Rab Noakes. A special award will also be awarded to a local hero who has made an invaluable contribution to Aberdeenshire cultural life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosted by Scottish personalities <strong>Alistair Heather<\/strong> and <strong>Mary Ann Kennedy<\/strong>, the night in the Granite City will also welcome live performances from some of the brightest lights on the thriving trad scene today including beloved singer <strong>Hannah Rarity<\/strong>, UK folk legends <strong>The Poozies<\/strong>, trad pop band <strong>Mec Lir<\/strong> and BBC Radio scotland Young Traditional Musician and Scots Performer o the Year <strong>Ellie Beaton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assynt piano player <strong>Rory Matheson<\/strong> will lead his Scottish Dance Band, while young musicians from <strong>Plockton Music School<\/strong> and Orkney youth project <strong>Hadhirgaan <\/strong>will also have the chance to perform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always a spectacular night, the event was last held in Aberdeen in 2019. Tickets for what is the most significant awards ceremony within Scotland\u2019s folk and trad scene are on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aberdeenperformingarts.com\/whats-on\/mg-alba-scots-trad-music-awards\">sale now<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scots Trad Music Awards organiser Simon Thoumire said:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to bring the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards back to the vibrant city of Aberdeen this year. We can\u2019t wait to see the nominations roll in and to welcome everyone along.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aberdeenshire singer <strong>Ellie Beaton<\/strong>, who has already had an award-winning year picking up BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year and Scots Performer o the Year awards in 2025, <strong>said:<\/strong> \u201cBeing from Rothienorman, I\u2019m absolutely thrilled to return to my home city and play at such a well-loved venue for musicians across Aberdeen and the Shire. The MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards are such a wonderful celebration of the incredible talent and creativity in Scotland\u2019s traditional music scene. It feels really special to be part of an event that\u2019s so close to home and to share the stage with so many inspiring artists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Siobhan Anderson<\/strong>, <strong>Music Officer<\/strong> at <strong>Creative Scotland<\/strong> said: \u201cAberdeen will play an excellent host to this celebratory evening in December, honouring the exceptional talent and hard work of Scotland\u2019s traditional music scene. With nominations opening, this is a crucial opportunity for the public to support and champion their favourite artists, events and organisations for these career-defining accolades.
