Hands Up for Trad are delighted that the Highland Society of London continue their sponsorship of the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2022. The Highland Society of London is a charity which promotes and supports the traditions and culture of the Highlands of Scotland. Amongst other activities, each year the Society awards the Gold Medals for the best player of Piobaireachd at each of the Argyllshire Gathering and the Northern Meeting; sponsors Gaelic singing prizes at the Royal National Mod and the fiction prize at the Gaelic Literature Awards; and presents the Highland Book Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n

In October 2022 the Highland Society of London will feature art for the first time at The Royal National M\u00f2d. The Highland Art Prize<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0aims to promote art and artists from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The event is presented by the\u00a0Highland Society of London, in conjunction with\u00a0An Comunn G\u00e0idhealach\u00a0and\u00a0Perth and Kinross Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition will be held at City Contemporary Art Gallery and will be open to the public with free entry throughout the duration of The Royal National M\u00f2d<\/a> in Perth (14th – 22nd October 2022). The exhibition will contain around sixty artworks selected and submitted by art organisations from around the Highlands and Islands, including local arts associations as well as galleries and community groups, all of whom have enthusiastically embraced the new addition to The Royal National M\u00f2d programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competition will be judged by Heather Dewar, the Islay artist and presenter of BBC ALBA\u2019s Dealbhan Fraoich. A shortlist will be announced at the beginning of the M\u00f2d week, and the prize-giving will take place at City Contemporary Art Gallery at 12.30pm on Friday 21st October. The prize-giving will be free and open to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u00a31,000 prize will be shared between the winning artist and their corresponding art organisation, to help support local participation in art. The winning artist will also have the opportunity to present their work at an exhibition at the Briggait in Glasgow during 2023, courtesy of Wasps, a charity that provides studios and spaces to artists and creators. Many of the artworks in the exhibition will also be for sale through City Contemporary Art Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duncan Byatt, President of the Highland Society of London, said: \u201cThe Highland Art Prize is an opportunity to celebrate and promote the diverse range of artists working across the Highland and Islands and to provide a national platform for their work. We are grateful to An Comunn G\u00e0idhealach and Perth & Kinross Council for including this exhibition within the wider celebration of Gaelic culture which is the Royal National M\u00f2d; and to Wasps for providing this year\u2019s winner with an exhibition opportunity in Glasgow during 2023. The Highland Society of London is dedicated to supporting both the arts and the Gaelic tradition of the Highlands, and this annual exhibition should prove to be a stimulating combination of the two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
