We asked Alan of Govan Pipe Band the following questions.

Tell us about yourself

Govan Pipe Band

From Humble Beginnings to Championship Success – A Govan Story Worth Celebrating

Born in the heart of Govan in 2013, The Wee Govan Pipers began with a simple but powerful ambition: to give young people the opportunity to learn Scotland’s traditional music, regardless of their background or circumstances.

What started as a community initiative, driven by the vision and dedication of Iain MacPherson and Iain Watson, has grown into an extraordinary success story of talent, determination, friendship and community pride.

Since its beginnings, the project has introduced almost 600 young people to piping and drumming, opening doors to opportunities, experiences and friendships that might otherwise have been beyond their reach.

The band’s rise through the competitive ranks has been remarkable. In 2022, Govan entered its first major pipe band competition at the Scottish Championships in Dumbarton and was crowned Grade 4B Scottish Champions, with its drum corps also taking the drumming title. From that unforgettable beginning, the band has gone from strength to strength, consistently achieving prize-winning performances and earning promotion to Grade 4A in 2025 to Grade 3B in 2026 where it celebrated winning the British Championships and being runners up at the Scottish, European and World Championships. The band were overwhelmed to win the Champions of Champions award for 2026 in Grade 3B.

Yet Govan’s greatest achievement cannot be measured in trophies alone.

Behind every performance are countless hours of practice, dedicated volunteer tutors, supportive families and young musicians who have learned the value of teamwork, discipline, resilience and believing in themselves.

This is a band that represents the very best of Govan: community spirit, opportunity, ambition and pride. It has shown that when people are given encouragement, support and the chance to shine, extraordinary things can happen.

From a small community project to a championship-winning pipe band, Govan’s journey is an inspiration.

A vote for Govan Pipe Band is a vote for much more than musical success. It is a vote for young people, for opportunity, for Scotland’s musical heritage and for a community that has dared to dream big.

Govan Pipe Band – proud of our roots, proud of our people and proud of how far we have come!

Any particular career highlights?

To date, being on a prize list anywhere list means the world to us but being crowned Champions of Champions 2026 in Grade 3B and our promotion to 3A is astonishing in such a short time!

What are your plans for the future?

Our plans for the future are ambitious! We want to continue building on our success, nurturing young talent and creating opportunities for the next generation of our pipers and drummers.

We want every young person who joins Govan Pipe Band to feel a sense of belonging, pride and believing what they can achieve.

Our journey is far from over. With continued dedication from our musicians, tutors, volunteers and supporters, we are excited about what lies ahead, both on the competition field, in our community and beyond.
