In each episode he walks and talks with a top folk performer in a landscape that has inspired their music and they sing and play on location. Matthew and the Folk on Foot team have travelled the length and breadth of Britain and Ireland recording more than 100 episodes. In Scotland, the podcast has walked with Jenny Sturgeon, Maurice Henderson and Ewen Thomson on Shetland, Kris Drever on Orkney, Duncan Chisholm at Sandwood Bay, Fiona Soe Paing in Aberdeenshire, Julie Fowlis on the shores of Loch Ness, Malin Lewis on Eilean Shona, Rachel Newton, Su-a Lee and Jarlath Henderson at the Isle of Skye Small Halls Festival, James Yorkston and Nina Persson in Tentsmuir Forest, Karine Polwart on Fala Moor, the many talented musicians who live in the village of Pathhead, Midlothian and the guitarist Jenn Butterworth in Dumfries and Galloway. The Telegraph described Folk on Foot as “a restorative breathing space in sound” and the podcast is noted for its high production values and ability to create high quality recordings of music played in the outdoors while also capturing the atmosphere and sounds of the natural world.

Any particular career highlights?
Every episode of Folk on Foot is a highlight, but I have also presented programmes on BBC Radios 1,2,3,4,5Live, The World Service and Local Radio. In the 1990s I was a senior BBC executive, launching the cult London station GLR, then, as Controller of Radio 1, re-positioning the network to reach a younger audience and support new British music – a strategy which is credited with being a catalyst for the success of Britpop. I then became Director of BBC Radio, Chief Executive of BBC Production and BBC Director of Marketing and Communication.
Since 2006 I have been the host of Radio 4’s weekly obituary programme Last Word and for ten years I was the presenter of the human interest interview programme Outlook on the BBC World Service. But nothing compares to the joy I feel when I stand in a spectacular landscape and hear one of the country’s finest musicians sing and play just for me (and all our Folk on Foot listeners, of course).

What are your plans for the future?
To make more wonderful episodes of Folk on Foot! We have also partnered with the charity Sound Roots to launch the Folk Album of the Year Award, celebrating the wide range of creativity in the folk scenes of Britain and Ireland. Eight nominated albums are chosen by an eminent jury made up of musicians, broadcasters, journalists and promoters. The next award gala will be live-streamed from Rochdale Town Hall on 9th February 2027 when eight nominated artists will perform and the overall winner will be announced.

Social Media
Website: http://www.folkonfoot.com
Facebook: @folkonfoot
Instagram: @folkonfoot
YouTube: @folkonfoot
TikTok: @folkonfoot

Listen to music link: https://podfollow.com/folk-on-foot

The 2026 MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards are on the 5th December 2026 in Paisley Arena, Lagoon Centre!
