My journey began in 2004 while studying Events Management at Glasgow Caledonian University, when I was fortunate enough to gain work experience at major events such as the HebCelt Festival and Celtic Connections. I continued working with both festivals in various roles over the years—and still do to this day.

After university, I spent nearly a decade working at Active Events with Lisa Whytock. During that time, I had the opportunity to work with a wide range of Scottish artists—booking tours, setting up record labels, and taking on roles such as Production Manager for events like Showcase Scotland. As well as travel the world promoting Scottish traditional music and various conferences and showcases.

In 2014, I joined the HebCelt Board of Directors and later became the Artist Programmer in 2023. Growing up in Stornoway with HebCelt on my doorstep, it’s been an incredible honour to take on this role—one I don’t take for granted.

Alongside my work in music, I also have a career in the television industry as a Floor Manager, working across a diverse range of productions including sporting events, quiz shows, children’s programmes, news, and of course, music events.

I’m a strong believer in community and collaboration. The Scottish music industry is one big family, and by working together, we can continue to grow and ensure it thrives for generations to come.

Why are you involved in Scottish music?
I’ve had a passion for Scottish music for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Stornoway, where HebCelt takes place, and attending concerts at An Lanntair played a huge part in shaping that love. Being raised with Gàidhlig also meant I was immersed in traditional music from an early age, often listening to Radio nan Gàidheal.

The level of musical talent that comes from Scotland is truly exceptional and celebrated worldwide. Why wouldn’t you want to be part of that — to support it, keep it alive, and help introduce younger generations to this incredible culture that we’re all part of.

Any particular career highlights?
Taking on the role of Programmer at HebCelt has been a tremendous honour. Having grown up in Stornoway with the festival at the heart of my community—and having worked with HebCelt for two decades—it feels incredibly meaningful to now help shape the event that has played such an important part in my life and career.

What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, my goal is to continue contributing to and supporting the Scottish music industry in any way I can. I’m passionate about helping it grow, nurturing emerging talent, and ensuring that our rich musical culture continues to thrive for future generations.

Michelle Shields Social Media
Website:
Facebook: HebCelt Festival
Instagram: HebCelt
YouTube:
TikTok:

The 2025 MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards are on the 6th December 2025 in Aberdeen Music Hall!
