\nI am a singer, songwriter and electronic producer based in Aberdeenshire. My new album Sand, Silt, Flint is inspired by the landscape, folklore and balladry tradition of north-east Scotland, and combines re-imaginings of traditional ballads combined with new compositions based on ancient stories.<\/p>\n

Whit wis it got ye involvit wi the Scots leid?<\/strong>
\nA few years ago I discovered that I am related to one of the north-east's original bothy ballad singers, John Strachan. I thought it would be a nice idea to record a version of one of his songs, and this eventually grew in to a full album, each song linked to a different north-east location and its story.<\/p>\n

Why dae ye feel it is important tae use Scots in everyday life?<\/strong>
\nwith everything so fast paced and constantly shifting day to day, it's so important to feel a connection with our roots and heritage to feel grounded.<\/p>\n

\nMy mother, Maribel Hay<\/p>\n

Do you hear Scots spoken regularly in your local area? Have you noticed any changes over time?<\/strong>
\nYes it's spoken regularly here in Turriff, and I notice many more young people speaking Doric.<\/p>\n

\nHaving one of my songs sung in Doric played on the BBC by Iggy Pop.<\/p>\n
