We asked Shona Donaldson the following questions.
Tell us aboot yersel or yer ootfit.
I’m a scots singer in my native Doric. I wis born and brocht up in Huntly, in the hairt o’ Bothy Ballad country and efter gan ti’ Glasgow I cam back ti’ the North East an settled in Tarland wi’ my husband Paul Anderson and bairns Hector and Roddy.
Whit wis it got ye involvit wi the Scots leid?
I wis brocht up spikkin Doric. I come fae a musical faimly and at ony perties we wid aa’ be singing alang wi my granny on the piana wi’ oor ain Donaldson faimly song book. There wis a mixture o sangs including Doris Day, pop sangs, bothy ballads and popular Scottish sangs like The Road tae Dundee. It wis jist made sense ti me ti sing the same wye I spoke and although I’m still partial ti Doris Day I canna go by the sangs in the Doric!
I started playing the fiddle at primary school and through that I went ti festivals like Keith, Strichen, Auchtermuchty and Kirriemuir. Fin I wis there I heard some brilliant singers and wis inspired ti try singing oot and aboot and I first sung in public at The Huntly Folk Club age 14. Efter that I spent alot o time listening ti great singers fae aa’ ower. I’ve nivver made a conscious decision aboot my singing, I jist sing the wye I spikk.
Ony particlar career heighlichts?
I’ve been lucky enough ti hiv travelled a’ ower singing Scots songs and hiv hid some amazing experiences including singing “Freedom Come a ye” wi a heist o fantastic singers and musicians in Rudolstadt, Germany, singing at this years Burns concert at Celtic Conections wi the Scottish Symphony Orcherstra and winning the Scots Singer o the Year at the MG Alba Trad Music Awards. I wid hive tae say though that my highlight wid be fin I won the Bothy Ballad Championship in Elgin. Since I first stairted singing Bothy Ballads it’s wis aye an ambition o mine ti win the championship and I wis trickit ti become the first woman ivver ti dee it. Although it is a competition I jist enjoy the hale nicht as I’m spending time wi’ my pals and hearing great sangs so winning wis jist the cherry on top.
Wha’s yer plans fir the days aheid?
It’s been a strange year fir musicians so I’m nae really planning onything if I’m honest!
My husband Paul and mysel hiv been deeing Friday nicht concerts online fae Pauls facebook page and we’ve deen them since the start o lockdown. We’ve really enjoyed deeing them, it’s certainly gien me something ti look forrit till fin we’ve nae been able ti go oot and perform for real live audiences. We’re planning on deeing a hogmanay concert online as weel so I’ll hae ti start thinking aboot that seen!
