Tell us aboot yersel or yer ootfit.
Perth High Schuil is in bonnie Perth. We hae a nummer o bairns ranging fae 11-18. Wir a fair muckle schuil wi ower 1400 bairns.
We are gye lucky to hae Matthew Mackie author o ‘The Tale o the wee mowdie’ as a Scots champion in oor computing department. Oor English dominies champion fir the leid wi Scots wirk and encouraging the bains to spik it or scriev it.
Whit wis it got ye involvit wi the Scots leid?
Oor English dominies hae bin promoting the Scots leid fir a nummer o years. It a stairtit wi Andy McCrae makin Scots wirk fir the bairns wi scrievin poetry n harken tae Dr Michael Demptser aboot growing up nae alood tae spik oor leid . It grew airms n shams tae become wirk fir a S2 in reading, spikin, scrievin, n using oor lugs to hark. Fiona Stewart used Harry Potter fir testin the bairns reading skills, while Kerry Fraser tested the bairns on ‘Magic pizza’ . Oor bairns then mak a Scottish product and gie a presentation using thir spikin skills to persuade local businesses and local P7 sichts to vote fir their product. Oor bairns hiv a rare time and think it is braw.
Tae get better Kerry Fraser went tae an event at Glasgow University aboot Scots language, and she wis able to meet wi fowk that alridy wis daein it in their skewl or could help wi resources.
We hid a workshop fae Laura Green fae the Scots language centre and Kerry wis affa excited aboot daeing mare Scots wi oor bairns.
She stairtit wi S1, makin wirk fir the bairns that hid a Scots treasure hunt and then efter they made ‘Wee Mannie and Lassies’ stories n studied Scots in buiks.
Ony particlar career heighlichts?
Some of oor S2 wir invited tae the launch o the Scots map o Scotland wi The Scots Language Centre. Oor bairns got to meet Dr Michael Dempster, which was a heighlicht o their dey. They wir asked to spik bit o ‘Sunset Song’ fir a prestigious audience wi John Swinney MSP and wir even interviewed for STV. Fir oor dominies Kerry Fraser and Alison Easson a heighlichts wis watchin oor bairns wirking wi wee yins fae primary schuil teaching them Scots. It wis a braw celebration o oor leid.
We were also gye chuffed fan Matthew Fitt gave oor bairns a workshop in scrievin Scots wi a Halloween theme. He read some o his Scots wirk tae the bairns and they scrieved characters o thir ain.
Amy Cowan wirked wi DC Thomson and brung back ‘Oor Wullie’ comics tae use with oor bairns, and gied makin recipes orr fit we are made o.
Dominies hiv bin impressed wi the joy o the bairns fan they can spik their leid wioot being telt aff.
Wha’s yer plans fir the days aheid?
We plan to continue oor Scots wirk and build on success attempting to introduce Scottish Studies and the Scots language award.
We also plan tae hae a Scots week efter visiting St John’s Academy to see their braw ideas.
Bit maist o a, we encourage bairns to spik their leid, and dinna correct it fan they scrive answers in Scots.
