We asked Miss Procek the following questions.
Tell us aboot yersel or yer ootfit.
A’m a high schuil teacher and a teach bairns who hae additional support needs. A teach maistly Literacy and Drama and try tae uise Scots leid whauriver a can.
Whit wis it got ye involvit wi the Scots leid?
Ma Grandfaither wis a prood Scotsman and ayeways taucht us frae a young age aw aboot oor heritage and we were ayeways hearin him speak Scots. Like maist fowk o certain age, as bairns at schuil we were never properly telt aboot Scots leid and were aften telt to speak richt.
When a became a teacher a knew that a wantit tae mak sure that a passed on the pride in oor culture and leid and when Education Scotland included Scots leid in Curriculum for Excellence a coudna wait tae uis it wi ma clesses. A’m lucky that in Fawkirk we haed a great local teacher, Katrina Lucas, who wis brilliant at helpin other teachers tae bring Scots leid intae their ain schuil.
Ony particlar career heighlichts?
A’ve got so many guid memories aboot uisin Scots leid wi ma clesses. Me and the bairns hiv had great fun daein things like writin scripts fae the stories in The Wee Book o Fairy Tales in Scots and ane time we translatit some o the books fae the Scottish Children’s Book Awards and acted them oot fir wee bairns frae a local primary schuil. We’ve also been lucky enough tae hae Matthew Fitt veesit oor schuil a few times and oor bairns huv ayeways haud a great time learnin fae him. Ma maist favourite thing we’ve done though haes tae be when we made oor ain televeesion show cawed “Scots Wha Say” whaur we acted oot skits that uised different Scots wirds and we shared it wi the ither clesses tae help them learn Scots wirds.
Wha’s yer plans fir the days aheid?
Oor bairns always love learnin aboot our leid and oor culture so the plan is tae continue tae build on including Scots leid throughout the schuil.
