Ross Ainslie, Beth Malcom, Manran, Siobhan Miller, Talisk Concert Review, Celtic Connections 2021

Well, what a superb, star-studded night that was! I’d been looking forward to it for days, and it definitely didn’t disappoint!

This spectacular evening kicked off with the legend himself, Ross Ainslie, and the Sanctuary Band! This was such an excellent start to the concert and was filled with phenomenal music. The quality of the sounds they were making was just superb and had such a great feel to it. Towards the end, Ross played an incredible piece on his pipes. When he started playing, beautiful haunting notes echoed around the room and it was so great to listen to. He then played much faster and literally started rocking the place down! It really reminded you of how awesome Ross Ainslie and the bagpipes are!

The wonderful Beth Malcom was next to play and sing. Her stunning voice was such a treat to listen to! I absolutely loved her song Leaving Loch Leven as it had lovely lyrics and a fab tune. During her performance, Beth accompanied herself with a keyboard which she was such a pro at. She was so natural at playing it and hardly had to look at what she was doing either! It was sad that she couldn’t be playing to a live crowd but nevertheless, she shone on fantastically!

Next up was the iconic Mànran. Standing on stage with cool smoke and lights they all looked like they were having a super time! With headbanging tunes like that, it really made you want to get up and party! For the next song, they were joined by the lovely Kim Carnie who sang a sensational Gaelic piece. My wee brother who was supposed to be in bed couldn’t resist coming in and dancing around the kitchen! I absolutely love Mànran and was even lucky enough to get a cool shirt from their merchandise for Christmas. They’re fab!

Next to perform was the fantastic Siobhan Miller who opened her act with the wonderful song All Is Not Forgotten. Siobhan’s voice is just so beautiful and distinctive, it’s such a pleasure to listen to! During her performance, Siobhan also sang the cheery sounding song What You Do With What You’ve Got by Dick Gaughan which we were all foot-tapping away to. I absolutely loved her performance; it was so soothing and super to listen to!

Last but definitely not least was the terrific trio Talisk. Starting with their Beyond set, Mohsen Amini encouraged everyone to get up and dance! When I was scrolling through my Instagram later, I saw someone had put that it was hard to sit still when Talisk were playing and that is totally true! My brother made a comment and said Mohsen can play as fast as lighting which is basically true too! Talisk will always have a special place in my heart as they were the last band I saw at a concert before everything was shut down. Luckily though, we still have Celtic Connections! This concert truly was absolutely sensational, and I would definitely recommend that anyone watches it if they haven’t already!!
