She sent me home with her first album to see if I liked any of the songs on it. She said she started off by learning songs with 3 or 4 verses. “Oh, Dear Me!” as sung by Mary Brooksbank stood out for me. It has a lovely melody and is about the hard life women had working in the Jute Mills in Dundee. Maureen told me her mother worked in the Dundee mills and that as a wee girl, on a Friday afternoon, Maureen and her friend would go up to the mill because they loved the smell of the jute. Two of my great-great-grandmothers lived in Dundee and also worked in the mills. I think this was another reason I could relate to the song. Maureen and I were talking about the fact that we love to sing harmonies and we both agreed that the melody was good for them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gsp_post_data\" \r\n\t data-post_type=\"post\" \r\n\t data-cat=\"news,uncategorized\" \r\n\t data-modified=\"120\"\r\n\t data-created=\"1380137849\"\r\n\t data-title=\"Oh, Dear Me!\" \r\n\t data-home=\"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/scotlandsings\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
I went up to Maureen’s last week to have a chat and discuss what we were going to do.
