Ballochmyle Lass
Chorus:
Take her home fae Kirkconnel, up the winding Menock Pass,
And set her free among the hills of Wanlockhead,
Where she roamed as a Ballochmyle Lass.
She was his heart, she was his soul,
A love like that can never pass,
And late at night, when the world lays sleeping,
He sheds a tear for his Ballochmyle lass.
The children are grown, but they still remember,
Sat on her knee the hours they’d pass,
She sang them songs of her childhood,
We sing them now to our Ballochmyle lass.
She was my friend, she was my mother,
Just one more day is all I’d ask,
To see her face and hear her laughter,
I still mourn for my Ballochmyle lass.
This is a song I wrote for my late mother Sandra. She was a Dumfriesshire lass from the mining village of Kirkconnel. She completed her nurses training at Ballochmyle hospital, during this time she frequented Wanlockhead where her close friends parents lived. She fell in love with this beautiful place and we returned many times during her lifetime to visit and holiday . When she died, her wish was for her ashes to be scattered on the hills overlooking the village.
I am a 43 yr old singer/ songwriter from East Kilbride. I came to music later in life- this was actually the first song I wrote- 4 years ago. I have discovered I have a real passion for writing about Scottish places, events and folklore. We have such a wonderful, exciting, tragic, passionate and inspirational history and I love trying to capture little pieces of it in song. By day I am a mother of a 22 yr old autisic man and I am also a support worker in an additional support needs school.
