Arisaig Acoustic Music Club got off to a great start in September with the appearance of Kris Drever and Ian Carr. It was a really special night as not only was it our first night but it was also the first full gig Kris and Ian had done together as a duo. They are both such brilliant musicians that it couldn’t really have gone wrong anyway but it was lovely and intimate and awe-inspiring. The room we used is the dining room in the Arisaig Hotel, which isn’t huge but we reckoned we could probably squeeze in about 40 which was perfect. Afterwards we went through to the bar and had a brilliant session in the style of the Edinburgh folk scene in the 90’s!
Things are very quiet up here in November so we decided not to do one that month, but instead went for a biggie in December. We went for a Friday night in the Arisaig Hall which was all decked out cabaret style with lots of candles and Christmas lights and decorations. Kathleen MacInnes came to sing, accompanied by Ross Martin and Angus MacKenzie, and some of the very talented kids who learn through the fèis movement here came to do support slots, as well as a couple of the students from the local Gaelic college.
We’ve decided to make it all quite a loose arrangement of when and where the clubs will be, as we’d like to make it work for the musicians who’d like to play here. So sometimes it will be on a week night in the hotel, and other times at the weekend in the hall. Some months there won’t be a club and some months there will be two! We’ll see how it goes anyway.
Coming up we are hoping to have a lovely duo from Canada who are on tour here in January, but this is not quite confirmed so can’t say too much yet. Following that we have Ian Carr returning with his old sparring partner Simon Thoumire, and a solo gig from the Kris’s legend of a father, Ivan Drever.
That’s it. Sorry I still haven’t finished with your tunes but got them down to 20 last night, just have to grade them now. I’ll do that tonight or tomorrow. That was a lot of tunes, I was cursing them at some points!
