We had a lovely time on Wednesday 8th June in Cockenzie at Greentrax Recording’s office. We invited a few friends of the Ian and June Green, bought some gold prosecco and converged on their office to present the Award. Greentrax have been a constant in the traditional music industry for the last 30 years and it is undeniable that we couldn’t have done without this company. You can see the photos (taken by Allan MacDonald) below and read my speech below that! Read more about Greentrax Recordings.

What would Scottish music have done without Greentrax Recordings? 30 years of releasing the best in Scottish music and as Sheena Wellington says “maintaining integrity, goodness and fairness to all”.
Not only that the label created and sustained a revival in trad music where young (and old) musicians could experiment with their culture. Shooglenifty’s Venus in Tweeds changed the world in my opinion and put an innovative musical Scotland on the map. It just wasn’t Shooglenifty though – Greentrax recorded and supported so many young artists when no-one else was.
It isn’t just young musicians though – Greentrax is a home to some of our older ‘more established’ acts some who are with us today 🙂 Ian and June and the Greentrax team did even more for these guys. They provided an understanding environment that bands could trust and then they sold loads of records across the world for them. In fact Greentrax sold loads of records for everyone!
When we had Foot Stompin Records we were always looking to Greentrax. I could never understand how they sold so many records and we were selling nothing! Whenever we went to Midem Record Fair in Cannes to find international distributors everyone already worked with Greentrax! They didn’t need us! Of course Ian was always by the phone if I needed advice about anything. It was never a problem.
When Hands Up of Trad was just getting started Ian was a big help. He was present at the very first Scots Trad Music Awards meeting in the Queen’s Hall in 2002. I had a idea that I thought might work and Greentrax were right behind us. Not only with advice but cash as well. Greentrax has continually sponsored an award and bought tables all these years – something we are very grateful for.
Of course 2016 is a challenging year to be a record label. I’m not sure how musicians and record labels make money from streaming however if anyone is going to work out how to do it will be Greentrax Recordings! A great thing about that is everyone will benefit.
So here’s to Ian and June and all at Greentrax Recordings. We can’t do without them and I look forward to the next inspirational 30 years!
