{"id":9432,"date":"2017-05-09T20:42:11","date_gmt":"2017-05-09T19:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/?p=9432"},"modified":"2017-05-09T20:42:11","modified_gmt":"2017-05-09T19:42:11","slug":"dosca-come-out-on-top-fighting-off-fierce-competition-at-the-battle-of-the-folk-bands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/dosca-come-out-on-top-fighting-off-fierce-competition-at-the-battle-of-the-folk-bands\/","title":{"rendered":"DOSCA COME OUT ON TOP,\u00a0FIGHTING OFF FIERCE COMPETITION\u00a0AT THE\u00a0BATTLE OF THE FOLK BANDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9431\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2017\/05\/i3a1095-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2017\/05\/i3a1095-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2017\/05\/i3a1095-768x550.jpg 768w, https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2017\/05\/i3a1095-1024x733.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2017\/05\/i3a1095.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The penultimate night of tradfest 2017 saw DOSCA \u2013 one of scotland\u2019s most promising trad acts \u2013 reign victorious, after a panel of judges declared them the winners of the debut <a href=\"http:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/battle-of-the-folk-bands-finalists-announced-2\/\">Battle of The Folk Bands<\/a> competition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>DOSCA &#8211; an energetic five piece ensemble of bagpipes, flute, guitar, bass and drums &#8211; had stiff competition from&nbsp;HECLA,&nbsp;The&nbsp;Iona Fyfe Band, Tradosaurus and TRIP.&nbsp; But the judging panel, made up of five musical powerhouses including Ross Ainslie and Joy Dunlop, crowned them winners, before acclaimed musician and composer, Jim Sutherland, presented them with a trophy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Watch DOSCA&#8217;s winning performance:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/09jf3RmqnvY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As well as the prestigious title, DOSCA\u2019s prize includes a day\u2019s recording at Caribou Recordings, along with the chance to perform at various festivals including the world-renowned Celtic Connections, TradFest and The Skye Festival.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hands Up for Trad exists to promote Scottish traditional music through education, information and advocacy to artists, participants and audiences and continues to be at the forefront of providing highly visible platforms, helping to nurture young talent.&nbsp;&nbsp;The organisation is supported by Creative Scotland, the development body for the arts and creative industries in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>TradFest &#8211; organised by Tracs (Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland), the national network for traditional arts &#8211; is a vibrant twelve-day showcase of live performances, walks, dances, exhibitions and street shows.<br \/>\nBoth Hands Up for Trad and Tradfest teamed up to stream the concert live via youtube, allowing fans worldwide to tune in.<\/p>\n<p>Event founder and Hands Up for Trad creative director, Simon Thoumire, said: \u201cI\u2019d like to offer a huge congratulations to DOSCA, their performance on the night was just great.&nbsp; I\u2019d also like to thank everyone who entered our Battle of The Folk Bands competition, the wealth of talent was outstanding but unfortunately, there could only be one winner.&nbsp; At Hands Up for Trad, we\u2019re passionate about helping support and nurture artists in the Scottish traditional music industry, and events like battle of the folk bands&nbsp;give musicians a platform to showcase their talents.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Associate director at Tracs (traditional arts and culture scotland), David Francis, said: \u201cTradfest is a proud supporter of the traditional arts, we always look forward to celebrating the vast array of talent scotland is producing.
