Harps of all sorts are featured with the Clarsach, our own Scottish Harp, at the heart of the <b>Edinburgh International Harp Festival <\/b>and the organisers are proud of their reputation of creating an event which is friendly, encouraging and inclusive. <em>4th &#8211; 9th April 2014,\u00a0Merchiston Castle School, Colinton, Edinburgh<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>HOMECOMING<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In this year of Homecoming, the EIHF will shine a light on Scotland.\u00a0 Concerts will feature some of Scotland\u2019s most travelled harpers.\u00a0 The recent generation: <strong>Catriona<\/strong><b> McKay,\u00a0 Maeve Gilchrist<\/b>, home from USA,<b> ,<\/b> <b>Rachel Newton<\/b> of <b>The Shee<\/b>, and <b>The Duplets<\/b> (<b>Gillian Fleetwood<\/b> and <b>Fraya Thomsen<\/b>).\u00a0 A special event, the <b>Hall of the Chieftain,<\/b> presented by <b>John Purser<\/b>, will feature some of Scotland\u2019s most established harpers: <b>Alison Kinnaird<\/b>, <b>Mary Macmaster<\/b> and <b>Patsy Seddon<\/b> (aka <b>Sileas<\/b>) and <b>Bill Taylor<\/b>, originally from the US but very much at home here. They will perform, along with <b>Allan MacDonald<\/b>, <b>Christine Primrose<\/b> and <b>Steve Byrne<\/b> spellbinding music from the 16<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 18<sup>th<\/sup> centuries. Coming from further afield are <b>Si\u00e2n James<\/b> from Wales and <b>Andrew Lawrence-King<\/b> from Guernsey and this year\u2019s special featured guest<b> Edward Witsenburg<\/b> from Holland as well as <b>Eva Curth<\/b> from Germany and <b>Clotilde Trouillaud<\/b> from Brittany.\u00a0 The wider world is represented by <b>Sixto Corbal\u00e1n<\/b> from Paraguay and <b>Cheyenne Brown<\/b> from Alaska with her <b>North Atlantic Trio<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>DANCE<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A very special feature for this year is the collaboration between harp and dance. <b>Andrew Lawrence \u2013King <\/b>and dancer<b> Steven Player <\/b>will explore and present\u00a0 baroque music and dance while <b>Maeve Gilchrist<\/b> will present her collaboration with step dancer <b>Nic Gareiss<\/b>.\u00a0 Participants will also be able to learn from these masters and join in dance workshops featuring Ceilidh, Breton and Belly dance<\/p>\n<p><b>NEW MUSIC<\/b><\/p>\n<p>With support from Creative Scotland, and in collaboration with Drake Music Scotland, EIHF has commissioned an exciting and inclusive piece from harpist composer <b>Fiona Rutherford<\/b>.\u00a0 Its premier performance will feature disabled musicians <b>Amy Moar<\/b> and <b>Rhona Smith<\/b> with the <b>Festival Orchestra<\/b> and <b>George Watson\u2019s College Ensemble<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>WORKSHOPS AND COURSES<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A core element of EIHF is the chance to learn and share skills and knowledge in a wide range of workshops and courses.<\/p>\n<p>Workshops, 19 in total, explore amongst others, songs of Angus and the Gael, electroacoustic music in performance and in the empowerment of disabled musicians,<\/p>\n<p>Courses, 43 in total, at every possible level, range from Playford to Paraguayan, Scottish, Welsh and Breton, how to practise effectively, accompany singing and improvise successfully.\u00a0 There are also harp classes for adult and child beginners and even the chance to learn Gaelic, ukulele and percussion.<\/p>\n<p><b>TEACHERS\u2019 COURSE<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Recognising the important need for harp teachers in many areas of Scotland and the UK, The Clarsach Society is sponsoring a short course to encourage competent players to have the confidence to pass on their knowledge and experience.
