The Adopt a Composer scheme pairs six amateur choirs, orchestras and ensembles with an emerging composer for a year.
\nThe project is run by Making Music in partnership with Sound and Music, in association with BBC Radio 3, and funded by the PRS For Music Foundation, the Philip and Dorothy Green Music Trust, and now for one additional seventh pairing by Creative Scotland.
\nComposers are mentored by an experienced composer, paid a fee and expenses, and retain all rights to the score.<\/p>\n
Eligibility:
\nComposers can take part in the scheme if they are:
\n– Interested in working closely with an amateur group to create a new piece of work.
\n– Able to arrange time in their schedule to rehearse and perform a new piece in their 2016-17 season (see below for the scheme timetable).
\n– At the beginning of their career as a composer.<\/p>\n
The process
\n11 July 9am deadline for receipt of completed applications
\n26 July: applicant interviews
\nSeptember: pairings announced at introductory event – meet your group!
\nNovember: the group hosts a workshop introducing you to their members
\nJanuary: you and your group workshop\/rehearse the pieces in progress
\nFebruary – April: further workshops and rehearsing of the draft piece
\nMay – September: premiere concert (usually recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3)<\/p>\n
Who else is involved?
\nEach pairing will be appointed with a mentor who will be there in the initial meetings when the composer and performing group are getting to know each other. They act as a source of ongoing advice to both composer and group as the work is composed, in musical and practical terms.
\nThe mentor will be somebody who is experienced in this field. They will attend sessions with the composer and be available for e-mail and telephone contact.<\/p>\n
