\"009-rating-1\"Hamish Napier, a multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer from the Scottish Highlands, and a very much\u00a0in-demand gun-for-hire musician on\u00a0Glasgow\u2019s vibrant traditional music scene, has nominated himself for no less than two categories in the\u00a0BCC Young British Celtic Music Awards<\/strong>, affectionately known as the \u2018Belters<\/strong>\u2018.<\/em><\/p>\n

Says Napier\u00a0\u201cI am delighted to finally give myself\u00a0some recognition for all of my hard work over the years, promoting myself on Facebook and YouTube. Being a folk musician nowadays is all about engaging with social media. Most of the bands I play with can\u2019t rehearse at all unless we are continually telling everyone about it on Facebook.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Napier has never met anyone that has won a Belter Award,\u00a0\u201cit was just such a surprise really, I mean, I totally forgot that because I am British, I do technically qualify for this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cTo nominate myself in the categories of \u2018Best Folk Album of the Century<\/strong>\u2018 and \u2018Most Patient Scottish Folk Musician Awaiting a Major English Festival Booking<\/strong>\u2018 is a real honour\u201d,<\/em>\u00a0says the 33 year old. \u00a0It was only recently that it suddenly dawned on me that it is perfectly acceptable to actually\u00a0give\u00a0myself<\/em>\u00a0credit for\u00a0my own<\/em>\u00a0work!<\/p>\n

\"015\u201cI am lucky that I still seem to be considered to be a \u2018young\u2019 musician, as I have a bald head and a beard, and a bit of a beer belly. \u00a0It was only last week that someone told me about\u00a0a 5-year-old fiddler from the Junior Junior Junior Feis Rois that recently secured a record deal with a major label after playing the Tongadale Reel backwards at high speed on a unicycle. I feel old just thinking about that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

With over 15 years as a professional musician, Napier has performed in several headline acts at major Scottish folk festivals and on national TV and Radio.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so thrilled to finally put myself forward for a Patience Award. However, I am aware that as a Scotsman, I have as much chance of actually winning a Young British Celtic Music Award as I do being asked to headline at a major English folk festival without one.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Nominated for Best Album, Napier\u2019s new release \u2018The River<\/a><\/strong>\u2018 was launched at Celtic Connections in January, and features a work specially commissioned by the festival as part of its acclaimed \u2018New Voices\u2019 series.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last Scottish folk musician\u00a0to actually win a\u00a0Best Album award wore an Arran Sweater when they were in fashion. I hope to win the award so I can become British like Andy Murray did when he won Wimbledon.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such a relief that I no longer have to wait for a\u00a0panel of industry experts to decide whether my album is any good or not. I just kind of realised\u2026well yeah\u2026I like it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The Belter Awards will take place in Napier\u2019s tenement flat in Glasgow next week, where the winners will be announced. \u00a0The ceremony will be filmed by independent media company the\u00a0Somhairle Macdonald Corporation<\/a>\u00a0and broadcast from\u00a0Napier\u2019s own website.<\/a>\u00a0 Napier\u00a0is also on the lookout for a \u2018D class\u2019 celebrity to announce the winners.<\/p>\n
