Art from across the Highlands and Islands arrives in Glasgow this October, alongside the Royal National M\u00f2d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Highland Art Prize returns for its fifth year, and this time Glasgow is the host. From Friday 9th to Saturday 17th October, around 75 recent two-dimensional works by artists from across the Highlands and Islands will be on show at The Briggait, 141 Bridgegate, Glasgow G1 5HZ, courtesy of Wasps Studios. The exhibition is part of the Royal National M\u00f2d, presented by An Comunn G\u00e0idhealach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prize is presented by the Highland Society of London. Its aim is to promote Highland art nationally and raise the profile of artists working in the Highlands and Islands. Works come in through local art societies and associations, and each organisation could submit up to five pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judges<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year’s panel is E\u00f2ghann Mac Colla and Scott Bennett. E\u00f2ghann is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Ayrshire whose participatory practice explores place, time and memory and stays closely tied to Gaelic culture. Scott, with his wife Susan, owns and directs the Strathearn Gallery in Crieff and the Annan Gallery in Glasgow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They will select a shortlist from the exhibition and announce the winner at the prize-giving at 12.30pm on Friday 16th October, also at The Briggait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s at stake<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winner receives \u00a31,000, shared with their local art organisation, plus the chance to mount a solo exhibition at The Briggait during 2027. A highly commended runner-up receives a \u00a3250 voucher for art materials from the Strathearn and Annan Galleries, and each of the 10-12 shortlisted artists receives a \u00a325 voucher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year’s winner, Katherine Sutherland of East Sutherland Art Society, opens her solo exhibition The Way I See It<\/em> on the same day, running until 9th November. It’s a collection of paintings on landscapes, quiet interiors and still lifes, and a good chance to see what the prize can lead to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
