{"id":21927,"date":"2025-02-24T10:57:37","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T10:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/?p=21927"},"modified":"2025-02-24T10:57:40","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T10:57:40","slug":"north-lanarkshire-to-host-its-first-ever-local-mod","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/north-lanarkshire-to-host-its-first-ever-local-mod\/","title":{"rendered":"North Lanarkshire to host its first ever Local M\u00f2d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2025\/02\/Rural-Choirs-Mod-2024-0280.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2025\/02\/Rural-Choirs-Mod-2024-0280.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21928\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2025\/02\/Rural-Choirs-Mod-2024-0280.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2025\/02\/Rural-Choirs-Mod-2024-0280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2025\/02\/Rural-Choirs-Mod-2024-0280-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2025\/02\/Rural-Choirs-Mod-2024-0280-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2025\/02\/Rural-Choirs-Mod-2024-0280-24x16.jpg 24w, https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2025\/02\/Rural-Choirs-Mod-2024-0280-36x24.jpg 36w, https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/files\/2025\/02\/Rural-Choirs-Mod-2024-0280-48x32.jpg 48w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>North Lanarkshire is set to host its first ever Local M\u00f2d, providing a new opportunity for young people and families to come together to celebrate Gaelic language, music and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organised by&nbsp;<strong>An Comunn G\u00e0idhealach<\/strong>, which has supported the teaching, development and promotion of Gaelic since its founding in Oban in 1891, Local M\u00f2ds help develop Gaelic language, history, and heritage at both local and national levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement coincides with the start of&nbsp;<strong>World Gaelic Week<\/strong>, which kicks off today, Monday 24 February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While North Lanarkshire previously hosted the National M\u00f2d in Airdrie some 32 years ago in 1993, this marks the first time a Local M\u00f2d will be held in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event will take place on&nbsp;<strong>Saturday 20 September 2025<\/strong>&nbsp;at Greenfaulds High School in Cumbernauld and sees North Lanarkshire join a 21-strong&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancomunn.co.uk\/localmods\/map\/en\">network of Local M\u00f2ds<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancomunn.co.uk\/localmods\/map\/en\">&nbsp;<\/a>across Scotland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supported by&nbsp;<strong>B\u00f2rd na G\u00e0idhlig<\/strong>, it will offer a range of competitions for young people, further strengthening Gaelic Medium Education (GME), which has been established in North Lanarkshire since 1997.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day-long event is expected to bring together participants and supporters of Gaelic language, culture and music from across North Lanarkshire and beyond, providing a platform for participants to showcase and enhance their skills and connect with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An Comunn G\u00e0idhealach President Maggie Cunningham said:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cWe are delighted that North Lanarkshire is launching a Local M\u00f2d this year. We know from experience that Local M\u00f2ds do a great deal to stimulate interest in Gaelic in their own communities and I am sure this new initiative will add to the numbers involved in Gaelic across the country. Gura math a th\u00e8id leibh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said:&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cLocal M\u00f2ds benefit businesses, enrich the Gaelic language and bring communities together. This latest announcement will be a welcome boost for Gaelic speakers and supporters in North Lanarkshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe benefits of M\u00f2ds were showcased at last year\u2019s National M\u00f2d in Oban, which generated an estimated \u00a33.6 million for Scotland\u2019s economy and attracted the highest attendance at a M\u00f2d event in five years.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo grow Gaelic, we have allocated an extra \u00a35.7 million for initiatives to promote language in the draft Budget for 2025-26.
